Dear Meteorite Enthusiast:
If you'd like to Find a meteorite, Identify a
meteorite and Find out how much your meteorite is worth,
then this might be the most important letter you'll ever
read.
Here's why:
With over 300 pages of information, this CD provides
an introduction to the fascinating world of meteorites
for the novice, but is also a detailed resource for the
expert collector.
Now, I know you're probably skeptical. That's normal
and healthy. Let me give you three good reasons we can
back up what we claim:
Three Reasons To Believe What I Say
-
Reason one: Researched and compiled by a geologist
with mineralogy and petrology experience
-
Reason two: Written by an author with three technical
books in print
-
Reason three: This CD is one of a series of published eBooks
by the author on subjects like water, terrorism and history.
In addition, the CD includes an extensive amount of
information and web links compiled by
professionals in astronomy and other sciences.
Here is a summary of the
benefits you receive
-
Explains the types of meteorites
- You
can easily identify a meteorite in the field
-
Mineralogy and petrology of meteorites -
You will understand the origin and history
of your meteorite
-
Location of impact craters around the
world - You can identify the best places to
find a meteorite
-
Extensive internet links to meteorite
sites - Easily research and find information
about your meteorite
-
Includes a teaching guide on meteorites
prepared by NASA - Have the information to
prepare a classroom curriculum or study guide
-
Photographs of known Earth impact
craters - See and understand the way
meteorites have changed our world
Now, you're probably wondering how and why we can do
all those things.
Let me explain.
What is a meteorite?
At any given moment in time, there are literary
thousands of rocky chunks that fall from the sky. These
pieces of rock that enter the earth’s atmosphere and
blaze across the night sky are called meteors. Those
that come to rest on the earth’s surface are meteorites.
Where are the meteorites?
On any given day it is estimated that 19,000 pieces of
debris enter the earth's atmosphere. Of these only 10
per year are recovered. Most burn up, never to reach the
surface of the earth. Of those that reach the surface,
some land in the oceans, some land in very difficult
terrain such as jungles, mountains, polar areas on ice
caps etc. But a very few are found by those interested
in finding and owning a piece of something "out of this
world."
There are only about 150 identified large impact craters
on the earth’s surface today. These are located on the
continents of North America, Europe, and Australia. They
range from a kilometer up to almost 200 kilometers.
About 800 baseball-sized or larger meteorites have
fallen in Arizona alone in the past 300 years, but only
about 40 have been recovered, according to David Kring,
professor of planetary studies at the University of
Arizona in Tucson.
Can I find one?
In 25 years of hunting meteorites, Bob Haag (an avowed
meteorite hunter) has followed ``million-dollar falls,''
multiple meteorite drops that happen about every 1,000
days, to Egypt, Russia, Japan and more than 50 other
countries. He has built an extensive collection, which
he said has been appraised at $25 million.
Another meteorite hunter has an interesting story. Jim
Kriegh, a retired University of Arizona civil
engineering professor, wasn't even looking for
meteorites when he made his big find.
While hunting for gold in remote northwestern Arizona in
1995, Kriegh stumbled across a strewn field, the
scattered fragments of a huge rock that dropped out of
its orbit between Jupiter and Mars about 15,000 years
ago and exploded over the desert.
Over a two year period, Kriegh and his partners pulled
more than 2,400 meteorite pieces from what would become
the Gold Basin Strewn Field. One of only two strewn
fields in Arizona, it is believed to be the oldest in
the world outside of Antarctica, Kring said. To date,
more than 5,000 meteorite pieces have been recovered in
the area.
However, according to the North Dakota Geological Survey
web site on meteors, "Finding a meteorite is more
difficult than the proverbial needle in a haystack." The
web site goes on to say:
"To discover a meteorite, find an environment where
rocks are not normally found. For example, the surface
of frozen lakes and rivers might work here in North
Dakota. The surface of many glacial ice sheets in
Antarctica and Greenland are favorite and productive
areas for meteorite prospecting too. In fact, more than
15,000 of the 22,000 known meteorites have been
collected in Antarctica."
