In short: A
bot is a software tool for digging through data. You give a
bot directions and it brings back answers.
The word is short
for robot of course, which is derived from the Czech word
robota meaning work.
Bots were not created for
the web. Originally they were created as part of an artificial
intelligence project to mimic human activity. This was robotic
software created for the Eliza Project.
Because servers are
interconnected on the internet, search engine servers send out the
bots that crawl from one server to another. Known as crawlers, these
robots search for web addresses and other information,
Bots have been developed for
different purposes. There are Search Bots, Tracking Bots, Download
Bots, Surf Bots, Shopping Bots, Artificial Life Bots, Web
Development Bots and Games Bots. Some of the sub categories of bots

Bots are part of
the world wide internet. They are both very useful and very evil
depending upon the use and the user's agenda. As with many things on
